Be Smart and Compare Gas and Electricity Usage Easily

Smart meters have the potential to be a major boon for cost-conscious homeowners.

With smart meters currently a major topic of discussion amongst energy suppliers, the British Government and environmental groups, it is planned that every home in the country will have one of these devices by 2020.

As is so often the case, the smart meter is such an obvious idea that it makes you think '"Why didn't we have this before?".

Instead of having a gas and electricity meter silently tucked away in a cupboard or outside cabinet, a smart meter displays exactly how much energy is being used at any one time, and - more importantly - the cost of that electricity. As well as leading to financial savings, the meter should also allow consumers to cut their emissions.

Smart meters have been the subject of a consultation by the Department of Energy and Climate Change since the scheme was originally mooted back in October 2008.

Now calls are being made by the Energy Retail Association (ERA), Ofgem and environmental groups to speed up the deployment of the technology.

Smart advantages

Smart meters offer real-time information about gas and electricity usage in the home, and about the costs that are being incurred.

Every flick of a light switch, every item on standby and every time the kettle is boiled will be identifiable on the smart meter - making it easy to pinpoint wasted energy and see the potential savings that can come from switching items off completely, rather than reverting to standby mode.

Precisely how these meters will work within the home is still up for debate. Currently over 400 homes in London are trialling a system that displays usage on a wall-mounted screen. There are also wireless devices that can be used across the home.

The meters have also been extensively tested in the business environment, with experts claiming that the technology could help small to medium-sized organisations to reduce their energy usage.

Future developments could see smart meter technology built in to devices such as televisions, mobile phones or computers - basically any device with a screen.

Cost controversy

Perhaps surprisingly, the smart meter plan has gained approval across the board.

Consumer watchdogs see the benefit, energy companies are happy as they can reduce their administration and meter-reading costs while environmental groups are enthusiastic about how the technology could help reduce emissions.

There has, however, been some controversy, chiefly relating to the fact that to meet Government targets over 46 million smart meters will be required at an expected cost of 9 billion.

The question is who will foot this hefty bill. Currently, as is often the case, it appears that consumers will be left to pay.

Estimated costs vary. A recent survey by consumer body Which? estimates that it will cost homeowners 300 over the course of 20 years, as energy companies add the cost of installation on to household bills.

Whether the industry will cover some of the costs is not yet clear. Many believe they should as energy companies look set to enjoy significant multi-million savings as the meters update in real time, meaning that annual meter-readings will be a thing of the past.

It is also likely that through being able to compare gas and electricity usage, consumers will become savvier in their choice of supplier - rewarding the more competitively price companies.

Which? also found that smart meters would only create savings of 1.40 per annum, a huge discrepancy compared with figures provided by researchers at the University of Oxford, who suggested that households could save 15 per cent, an average of 130.

However, despite the inconsistencies in projected potential financial savings, the majority are backing smart meters to transform the energy market - both for consumers and for the energy giants.

Gas, Pellet, Wood and Electric Stoves

There are a number of home heating stoves available, and there are a number of ways to run them too. Let's consider each one separately.

Gas stoves are run by propane gas, meaning that the combustion system is gas, or they can be run by natural gas. It's a very clean burning gas and the newer stoves do not even show a pilot light nor any burner tubes. With many of them you truly cannot tell the difference between a wood burning combustion system and a gas one. The logs inside look completely real, and the burning embers under the logs are also totally lifelike. But mainly it's the yellow flames that lick the logs that make it appear so realistic. Many of the newer gas stoves are built of cast iron and the styles can be either ultra modern, or old style gas stoves.

Many also come with fancy accouterments, such as an aromatherapy unit, or even a convection fan! Or you may wish a certain finish to the gas stove. There are steel stoves, and stoves with porcelain enamel insets, and even soapstone, which is known to be one the best materials known to science at this time to retain heat the most as well as the longest. People often buy these electric stoves in order to have the special ambiance that the traditional wood stove gives, but do not have to have special installations as gas, pellet or wood stoves require. All that's really necessary is a standard 120V outlet--plug it in and voila! The flame technology on these is also incredibly realistic.

Home Heating Stoves

As part of trying to reduce our footprint on this glorious earth, we have invented new ways of heating our homes. In truly frigid locales, many find that using home heating stoves augments the efficiency of their furnace, and may even be used for entire home heating when the temperature is not quite as cold.

Home heating stoves come in a myriad of choices, cast iron being the most commonly used as it was back in the days of the all around heating and cooking sources in many cabins. Interestingly enough though, the "old days" pioneers came up with some exceedingly fascinating and out of the ordinary thinking about heating with home heating stoves. They actually used soapstone to retain the heat better in their stoves. Soapstone if you are not familiar with it, is a metamorphic rock. It was created by heat and pressure contained in the world's tectonic plates. The rock will retain heat for an incredibly long time, but will not burn. Native American Indians used soapstone to make cooking slabs from it, and even constructed fireplaces from it for the white man. They already knew that soapstone could never be degraded by the application of heat. This is why even today we can find artifacts such as soapstone smoking pipes left over from the American Indians.

Today the "new and improved" home heating stoves are found to be substantially improved by the use of soapstone. Soapstone, if you'll recall hold heat longer, thus even when put out the stove will continue to put off heat. This alone makes it very economical to use as a stove.

Gas is frequently used now to burn in the stoves, for instance a gas stove that burns gas will use a maximum BTU per hour of 18,000 BTU, can heat up to 850 SF with the use of its fan. That means that it has a steady state efficiency of approximately 80.1%. That's such a tremendous difference compared to the efficiency of a plain "old" fireplace for instance, which lost the majority of its produced heat up the chimney and polluted the environs for miles.

The newer gas stoves may have the efficiency of gas, but often they have the heartwarming "look" of the old traditional woods stoves. Some of the stoves come with porcelain enamel sides or even soapstone! Modern conveniences are frequently built in depending on what model you choose, so you can have modulating remote control to control your stove, or a wall unit thermostat. You can also "hype" it up with a convection fan, or an aromatherapy tray!

One of the best features of a gas stove is the fact that when the weather gets really bad, and the streets are darkened by power blackouts, your room will remain toasty warm and you'll be able to enjoy the dancing yellow flames that seem to lick at the charred logs and the glowing wood embers inside the stove. All man made; yet they look so very real that most can't tell the difference.

What are radiant barrier chips and how can they help my home? Keeping a comfortable interior climate in your home could be a challenging task especially if you live in an area of the world with extreme weathers or with the ones that often varies.

During summers the heat from the goes inside your house through the roof that's why most houses install in insulation to help slow down the heat from entering your home. In winter season, the season travels rapidly upwards and escapes in your attic.

Dusts are known to affect the effectiveness or the reflectivity of every thing. It is therefore advisable to install not only a layer of these radiant barrier chips. Instead, take about 7 to 8 layers of them in your attic so that even if the top layer has too much dust, the lower layers will take charge and stay as reflective and shiny as it was the day it was installed.

Save Money on Summer Cooling Bills Tips to Help You Do Just That

If you are like many of us your summer cooling bills really took a large chunk of your vacation money or even holiday shopping money that you had saved up. However, you are probably like many of us and are trying to find any method possible to save money during these times of hard economic times, but sweating inside of your home because of the heat is generally not an option for many people. I know that for me even though my house is well insulated and does have an air conditioner that is good on energy it can still be a pricey summer months. Here is a tip that can help you keep your home cool without having to use the air conditioner.

The tip that I have found that works out really well and even helps out the air conditioner when I do have it on is to make use of curtains. I know that normally I like to leave my curtains open to let in light, but you have to remember that with that light it brings in a ton of heat! I noticed a marked difference in how often my air conditioner had to come on and also in the temperature of my house when I just simply closed the curtain. If you are a numbers person you can consider that I would have my thermostat set at 70 and it would kick on about three times during the day. However, after I closed my curtains the air conditioner would only come on once a day!

Is a Heat Pump Sufficient to Run Underfloor Heating?

Andrew Grimsley, Nu-Heat's Technical Director explains how this can be achieved:

"There are many factors to consider when designing a combined underfloor heating and heat pump system, but how successful it is will basically depend on the insulation levels of the property and, therefore the flow temperature the heat pump has to generate."
Flow temperatures

All heat pump types operate using similar principles - by harvesting energy from the environment and 'compressing' it to a temperature that can be used for a home's hot water and heating needs.

Probably the largest single factor affecting the efficiency of a heat pump is the flow temperature that it is asked to produce. The higher this temperature the more work the compressor has to do and the less efficient it becomes. As a result, a heating system that can operate with lower flow temperatures, such as underfloor heating which typically operates at around 55oC, allows the pump to maximize its effectiveness and minimize both its carbon production and the fuel costs for the homeowner.

When underfloor heating systems are specifically designed to be fed by a heat pump, additional tubing and more efficient floor constructions can be used to allow even lower flow temperatures, typically 35oC - 45oC, whilst still achieving the required air temperature inside the property (averaging 21 oC in living areas). Due to the smaller surface area of the heat emitter, a conventional radiator system requires a significantly higher flow temperature to achieve the same internal air temperature. Consequently underfloor heating and heat pumps are perfect partners as they are both well suited to the low temperatures involved in maximizing efficiency.

When operating UFH with a GSHP, an open flow weather compensated system is preferred, with an external sensor checking any deviation in outdoor temperature, comparing flow and return temperatures on the UFH, then adjusting accordingly.

Insulation, insulation, insulation!

With underfloor heating, warmth passes into the room from the floor and it is therefore important to reduce building heat loss, including downward heat losses into the ground or the floor below. Recent changes to Part L of the Building Regulations have focused attention on the importance of insulation levels within domestic dwellings and in a new building that meets the regulations, there will always be an adequate level of floor insulation, and in these circumstances pumps can provide 4 to 5 kilowatts of free energy for every 1 kilowatt of electricity used to power them.

Usually, the aim should be to insulate the building so that less than 50 watts of heating are required per square meter of floor space. This will then ensure that the UFH water temperatures can be kept to a minimum and the heat pump can operate at a higher Coefficient of Performance (COP) -typically 4 - 5 for a ground source unit. In general it is more cost effective to increase insulation levels than it is to install a larger pump and buildings that exceed the requirements of Part L of the Building Regulations are most suitable.

In theory, there is nothing to prevent a heat pump from working in a building with a higher heat loss, such as a property that requires up to 80 watts per square meter. However, higher heat loss requires higher heating water temperatures from the heat pump - typically 55 C rather than 35 - 45 C, meaning the heat pump's COP may suffer although the heat pump may still be sufficient to heat the property.

Heat pumps and underfloor heating - project compatibility

Installers can quickly determine whether heat pump technology is suitable for a project by completing a series of short questions, such as detailing the approximate internal size of a property compared to the available outside space, and confirming the level of insulation, as set out in Nu-Heat's online 'heat pump guide'. Heat pumps will deliver the maximum efficiency in a building insulated to high standards with very low heat losses and where high-resistance floor coverings are not used.

Home Built Wind Generator Power

Hello and thank you for visiting this Green Energy article. My name is Joshua Mintz and my partner's and I have begun a campaign for green energy use and things like home built wind generator power. Nothing is better than seeing so many people show such interest in alternative energy.

1 of the first thing's I love to say, is that no matter what you decide to do, as long as you continue to keep your mind open and constantly search for an alternative energy source for your home and your family, you are doing your part.

You see, so many people, whether it be celebrities, athletes and even politicians, love to TALK about what needs to be done. Its always people like you and me that make the real difference. So again, I thank you for showing interest. And what I will do now is describe why home built wind generator's are worth building, how they can pay off immediately and where you can go to get started right away.

Why Should You Create Your Own Wind Powered Generator?

I usually assume that most of us realize how much money we can save by creating our own energy source. Thats pretty obvious, and I know that its the main reason why so many people are shifting to the do it yourself power generator's. So I want to discuss some other reasons, like why it's so awesome to "get off the grid".

The Grid being "normal" electricity , provided by our local energy companies. Providing yourself with off the grid energy will give you a certain independence that cannot be fully described. Its something that we never really understand until we are standing there next to our wind generator after we have completed the project. Lets just say that you will never look at things in the same light again.

If anything were to every go wrong or if energy prices were to ever spike dramatically, we will not be affected in any way. Thankfully there are no laws against providing yourself with free energy.

Another benefit of using your own energy generator is the fact that, if you were to ever lose your job, your family will be SAFE. How many time's have we seen or known about someone that had to live in the dark after losing a job or getting laid off. I mean, many times, especially now, things happen that we have no control over.

So why should we be at the mercy of "Big Energy"?

Not to mention the actually money you can save along the way. Think about Christmas. ALL the light's you want without even thinking about it. I don't know about you, but I cant help but imagine the electric bill when putting up thousand's of those little light bulbs at Christmas time.

But it is the little thing's like unlimited Christmas light's and extra peace of mind that make home built wind generator power so great. Not to mention the fact that we can now get PAID to use alternative energy sources.

As most of us now know,, the IRS will provide us with a "kickback" for home built wind generator power and all the other green energy sources. Think about that- do you think the government would actually PAY us to use these energy sources if they weren't great for our earth? I usually like to go into the entire explanation on the global impact of green energy generator's, but for the sake of time and article space, I will just leave it to the fact that we get a paycheck from our government for using alternative energy.

So please, keep on looking to create your own home built energy generator's. Switch to CFL Bulbs - Save Money and Energy With Compact Fluorescent Bulbs

I'm sure by now you've heard of compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and if you aren't yet using them, you are missing out on some real savings. One Energy Star qualified CFL can save you between $30 and $45 over the life of the bulb.

CFL bulbs use about 75% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and although more expensive, they will pay for themselves in about 6 months and last up to 10 times longer. Some CFL bulbs last up to 10 years and come with a manufacturer replacement warranty. That means you will also save by buying less bulbs. The drop in electricity usage from CFL bulbs means a drop in demand and a reduction of mercury being emitted by power plants.

Few people realize that household lighting accounts for 15% on average of a families power consumption. I know you remember being told and maybe constantly reminded to turn the lights off when you leave a room, but with energy and money savings in mind, you won't have to force yourself to do so. Also remember lights give off extra heat which will have your air conditioning working overtime in the summer to cool what is already unneeded energy consumption, just another reason to flip that switch when the lights aren't being used.

Additional points to note

  • CFL bulbs do contain a very small amount (4 milligrams on average) of mercury and should be disposed of at your local recycling location. To find your local recycling locations you can visit
  • While dimmer switches can set an ambiance and save you money on your energy bill with old incandescent light bulbs, it is not recommended that you use them with CFL bulbs as it can shorten the life of the bulb.

Save Money and Energy - Adjust Your Thermostat

Maintaining a comfortable temperature level in your home is the biggest hitter on your energy bills. Did you know that your heating and cooling accounts for around 45% of your total utility cost? The easiest and most cost effective advice I can give you is simply adjusting your thermostat up in the summer and down in the winter.

This suggestion probably sounds obvious to most but many are unwilling to even consider making a small adjustment. I'm not expecting anyone to be uncomfortable in their own home, but you can save 3% per degree in the winter and 3-4% per degree in the summer. Now 2 or 3 degrees is hard to physically notice but can reduce your energy consumption throughout the year considerably. How about a 6-10% yearly savings, are you willing to consider a small bump now?

Another thing to consider is installing a programmable thermostat. You can program these thermostats to automatically change the desired temperature of your home while you are away at work or on vacation effectively saving you money. Of course you could do this yourself before leaving but the possibility of forgetting is always there.

A programmable thermostat is a great cost effective solution and will easily pay for itself in less than a year. You won't have to be uncomfortable when you get home because your smart new thermostat will have made an automatic adjustment and started working towards your desired temperature before you get home.

There are of course a wide variety of programmable thermostats ranging from inexpensive to highly advanced and very costly. You can get the job done with a very basic version found at any home improvement store. Anyone can switch out a thermostat even if you aren't the advanced DIY type. Thermostats run off of low voltage so there's no need to worry about electric shock, just follow the provided instructions and your upgrade will be done in less than 10 minutes.

Very important notice of extreme money and energy waste

Keep in mind that cranking your thermostat way up or down doesn't actually make your system heat or cool any faster, so adjust your thermostat in small increments. In fact, if you have a heat pump installed and you crank the heat way up, it may actually turn on the backup or emergency heat which can turn on heat strips and unnecessarily jack your electric bill up costing you money and wasting energy.

Solar Energy As the Best Renewable Energy

Are you familiar with the term "solar energy"? It can be defined as the radiant light and heat from the sun that man has gathered, stored and then converted into useful source of renewable energy. It has been harnessed by humans since the olden times thru a wide variety of constantly evolving technologies that has been developed for thousands of years.

Although solar energy is intermittent, that is, it is not available 24 hours a day it is still virtually an unlimited source of energy. This past century the usage of this kind of renewable energy has been patronized mostly by nature lovers and environment friendly individuals. It belong to the group of renewable energy sources since scientifically its source cannot be exhausted unlike other sources of energy like coal and oil that once consumed it can never be used again.

As of the latest, only a fraction of the people here on earth makes good use of renewable solar energy. Development of this energy has been dynamic this past decade and since the late 1990s thousands of people are already using this kind of energy.

But thousands of people are but a minuscule amount compared to billions of people around the world that do not or can not make use of this renewable energy source. The United States Government is one of the governments that make it a point to push thru with this kind of alternative energy source since it upholds the policy of finding alternative and renewable sources of energy.

Renewable solar energy is converted into electrical charges by meats of heat engines popularly known as "photovoltaics." It is gathered by using "solar panels" made up of solar cells that absorb the sunlight. It is then stored into solar energy containers called "solar batteries" for it to be used at a further time.

Today, this renewable energy source has been classified into two kinds. First is the active energy gathering and the second one is the passive energy gathering. The former refers to energy gathering techniques that primarily involve machinery and equipment in gathering vast quantities of sunlight.

The latter refers to using solar panels during daytime without any help of any machine. Passive solar energy gathering involves a limited amount of solar energy gathered, unlike the active one.

Install Low Flow Shower Heads and Toilets - Save Water and Money

Did you know that low flow shower heads use between 1.6 - 2.6 gallons per minute while old shower heads use 2.6 - 5.2 gallons per minute? Probably a silly question to ask, but the most surprising part about these stats is that you can't actually tell a difference in the water pressure.

Now I realize that most everybody takes showers now days due to convenience, but some people enjoy taking baths instead of showers on occasion or maybe even frequently. Truth is few people think about how much more water usage is involved to fill up the tub.

I know that I'm not going to talk you into never filling your bathtub again but just so you are aware, the average person uses 78 gallons of water every time they take a bath? When you compare that to a 10 minute shower with a low flow head that uses only 16 gallons, now what do you think? Don't forget, you are not just wasting water but the electricity or gas it took to heat that water too, not to mention the sewage or waste water bill that goes along with it.

So in essence if you have city water, you're paying for bathing in 3 different ways. You pay for the water itself, the electricity or natural gas to heat the water used, and you're paying for the sewage when the water goes down the drain.

I aim to simply make you aware of possible resource wastes and while you are putting some real effort into saving water and money, check your toilet's gallon per flush or (GPF). You may have an older toilet that uses 7, 5, or 3.5 GPF while the new water saving standard is 1.6 GPF. You can even get a dual flush version that uses either 1.6 or 0.8 GPF depending on; well we'll just say #1 or #2. A dual flush toilet will easily save you up to $100 per year on water and sewage or waste water bills.

Do you have a leaky faucet?

If you do, you should be aware that one drip per second can add up to 165 gallons per month. To better put this into perspective, 165 gallons is more than the average person uses in two weeks. With this in mind you will want to fix your leaky faucet as soon as possible since waiting can cost you more than a new shinny one.
