Understanding the Parts of a Homemade Windmill

No one can deny that the cost of electricity always goes up but never down. Due to this, many individuals are looking for alternative energy sources and many businessmen and scientists alike are finding ways to help consumers get the energy they need at a lesser cost. Recently, we have seen an influx on products that help people save on electricity, especially through tapping natural resources that are pretty much abundant, such as the wind. Nowadays, a homemade windmill is not a wonder but more of a necessity.

Although there are many available windmills in the market and these products are proven to be effective, they are also expensive. Since a windmill is not a new concept, many people prefer to build a homemade windmill rather than buy one that is prefabricated. The main benefit here is that you can customize your own windmill and you can also save a lot on cost. Manufactured windmills are very costly and may reach up to $15, 000 US dollars.

But what are the main parts of a homemade windmill that you should be aware of? First off, you need the rotor blades. These are the three blades you see that the wind turns. Aerodynamics and technology has provided new insights as to what size and shapes are best used for windmills. Some rotor blades are known to suck air better than the others. The next part that you need is the shaft. Once the rotor blades are turning, the shaft is rotated. The wind energy is then transferred to the shaft and is moved to the generator. The generator is the part responsible in the actual conversion of wind energy into power that is usable at home. Generators are supposed to be sturdy and should be able to withstand frequent use, do not buy cheap generators for your homemade windmill because it might just conk out at the time you expect it to be productive.
